It is the current governmental center of county of Lyon County, the first governmental center of county being established at Dayton on November 29, 1861. After the Dayton Court House burned down in 1909, the seat was moved to Yerington in 1911.

Yerington is positioned at the intersection of US 95 - A and Nevada State Route 208.
